Rented Houses for Urban Poor in Mumbai

Rented Houses for Urban Poor in Mumbai
Good News to Lower Middle Class and Middle Class people in Mumbai. Maharashtra government’s came with a new policy to construct half a million rental homes for the poor in the mumbai city. It will serve as a major boost for the rental housing concept and effectively serve the cause of the economically weaker sections all over the country. It would particularly benefit those who migrate from other states or have been transferred but cannot afford to buy a house in a city like Mumbai. There is a shortage of 24.70 million houses all over the country and rental housing could “contribute significantly to reduce this shortage.”.Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is going to implement this rental-housing scheme, and planning to construct 200,000 rental homes in different areas within the next one year.

According to the plan, self-sustainable cluster houses or flats admeasuring 160 square feet will be constructed and given on rent to those coming to the city. These rental dwellings would be constructed on land available under Urban Land Ceiling and Regulation Act.

The houses will be given on rent to those coming to the city and having a combined family income of Rs 5,000 per month. Also, those individuals who are self-employed or have business in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and having the requisite monthly income will be eligible for these houses. One condition is that those having houses within the MMR won't be eligible for getting houses and preference will be given to those hailing from Maharashtra. In case of a married couple, the house will be allotted to the couple jointly. Also, 15 per cent of the total constructed area would be earmarked as convenient shopping areas. The tenants will be charged Rs 800 per month as rent.
